Plant Biodiversity in the Scotland District and the Link to Traditional Medicine

On August 26, 2021, a group of enthusiastic students from the University of the West Indies - Cave Hill Campus got the opportunity to go into the Scotland District a week after attending an online seminar with Dr Sonia Peter.

In this seminar topics covered were:

  • The Scotland District

  • The Importance of Plant Biodiversity

  • Plant Families found in the BERP Field Study

  • Number of Species per Family

  • Profile Assessment for Adaptation

  • Examples of Data Sets

  • The Link to Traditional Medicine

At the start of the field trip, students were given a booklet with 14 plants. The descriptions of these plants were given in the hope that while working in small groups they would be found in a given time. Once identified, additional features and the role of the plant (including its traditional value) were discussed.

Below are some highlights from this trip, with amazing plant pictures taken by the students.
